BILL MOYERS JOURNAL PROFILES CHRISTIANS UNITED FOR ISRAEL
EXAMINES PASTOR HAGEE’S CALL FOR STRIKE AGAINST IRAN
Bill Moyers Journal reports on the politically powerful group Christians United for Israel (CUFI), whose leader, Pastor John Hagee, advocates for a preemptive strike against Iran.
“When 50 million evangelical bible-believing Christians unite with five million American Jews standing together on behalf of Israel, it is a match made in heaven,” says Hagee. “It is time for America to…consider a military preemptive strike against Iran to prevent a nuclear holocaust in Israel and a nuclear attack in America.” To preview a short clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Auf-Su-xZVU
The report is followed by an interview led by Moyers with Rabbi Michael Lerner, editor of Tikkun, a Jewish journal of politics, culture, and spirituality, and Dr. Timothy P. Weber, an evangelical Christian, historian, and author of On The Road to Armageddon: How Evangelicals Became Israel's Best Friend. Lerner and Weber provide theological and political context behind CUFI’s mission and Hagee’s statements.
“This is one group in a long line of similar groups that began to organize in the late '70s and early '80s which combined a firm belief of Bible prophecy and a particular political agenda that has gained more and more power as the years have gone on,” says Weber.
“There are an awful lot of people who genuinely care about Jews; decent good people in this movement who, unfortunately, are being manipulated for a political agenda,” says Lerner. That is…not at all in the best interests of the Jewish people or in the best interest of Israel.”
