Strong quake hits Indonesia, potential for tsunami

A tsunami warning was issued when the quake struck 10:43 Jakarta time (0343GMT) with epicenter at 159 kilometers southwest Lais town of Bengkulu province and with 20 kilometers under sea bed.

JAKARTA, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- A powerful quake with magnitude of 6.4 rocked Bengkulu province in Indonesia's Sumatra Island on Tuesday, Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said here.

A tsunami warning was issued when the quake struck 10:43 Jakarta time (0343GMT) with epicenter at 159 kilometers southwest Lais town of Bengkulu province and with 20 kilometers under sea bed, an official of the agency Muhammad Ramdan told Xinhua.

The quake was felt at 2 to 3 MMI (modified mercally intensity),a scale that enable to crack buildings, at Muko Muko regency and the capital of the province Bengkulu city, he said.

Twenty-three people were killed and a massive destruction in the west coast of Sumatra Island caused by the 7.9 Ricther scale quake last month.

Indonesia is laid on a vulnerable quake-hit zone so-called the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where two continental plates, stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia, meet that cause frequent seismic and volcanic movements.
