SAS convicted of industrial espionage

The Borgarting appeals court has convicted SAS Braathens (Norway) of industrial espionage against competitor low-fare airline Norwegian. Norwegian will now sue for damages.

The Oslo court has ordered SAS Norway to pay a NOK 4 million fine.

The court ruled that SAS had obtained and used confidential information from rival airline Norwegian through the Amadeus booking system, from December 2001 until December 2005.

A lower court had earlier acquitted SAS Norway from the charges filed by state prosecutors.

Norwegian will now sue SAS for damages, "for a considerable sum of money", to quote Norwegian CEO Bjoern Kjos.

SAS Norway Chief, Ola Strand, sais he waas surprised and disappointed by the appeals court ruling.
