PAOLA — The president of the local school board was found dead of a gunshot wound just hours after an FBI cyber crimes task force executed a search warrant at his home.
Matt Farmer, 40, an electronics engineer, was found outside his Paola home around 10 a.m. last Friday after shooting himself, local authorities said. Three hours before his body was found, federal agents had arrived at his home with a search warrant and stayed about two hours, FBI spokesman Jeff Lanza said.
Lanza said he couldn’t say why the task force was at Farmer’s home, what agents were looking for or whether they found anything.
Paola Superintendent Rod Allen said he was alerted last Friday that investigators were at Farmer’s home, then notified later that Farmer had committed suicide.
School leaders and students were stunned by the news because of Farmer’s involvement in school activities, including his help in founding the school’s robotics team.
He had been on the school board for about three years.
