A routine helicopter flight near Trenton turned unusual when New Jersey State Police noticed a large swastika cut into a cornfield.
A swastika was cut in the same field in July 1998 and an even bigger one in a nearby field in 1999. No one was arrested in either case.
The Nazi symbol occupied several acres on a farm in Washington, a few miles outside the state capital, Trenton, The Trenton Times reported. But many neighbors said they did not realize it was there because it is only visible from the air.
"I saw helicopters, and they were circling," Debbie Tamasi, who lives nearby, said. "I had no idea."
Troopers spotted the swastika on Friday as Jews began to prepare for Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
Todd Colarusso, chairman of the company that owns the field, said that he learned of the swastika from local police.
Edwin Diefenbach, a Washington resident who sells decorative cornstalks, said that cutting them by hand is not difficult with the right type of knife.
