91-year-old jailed for 8 days

A 91-year-old man says DeLand, Fla., police used excessive force when they arrested him for allegedly refusing to obey officers.

Police were phoned after William Kepler, a World War II veteran, allegedly threatened a nurse at the assisted living facility where he resides, WKMG-TV, Orlando, Fla., reported Tuesday. The nurse had apparently refused to let Kepler take a walk around the Deerfoot Manor Alf facility.

Police said Kepler refused to obey their orders, but Kepler contends the police used excessive force. Kepler admitted to possessing a fake gun, but he said he never pulled it out during the encounter with the nurse and police.

"They should have an ethical (manager) in there watching them and correcting them. They are plenty wrong," Kepler said of the assisted-living home. "They need a legitimate, honest person to guide them because they are crooks."

The veteran spent eight days in jail before his $6,000 bond was paid by a stranger, James Floyd.

"There is no excuse for what they did to him, especially when he did not show a firearm or pull a firearm or pull a weapon," said Floyd, who is allowing Kepler to stay with him for the time being. "They just flat took him down."
