Shooting on Tube....

It was just another news item, but a shocker nonetheless. Officer "Ivor" (your report, 9 October) described how he pinned Jean Charles de Menezes to the seat and the next moment was hit by the shockwave of a gun being discharged close to his left ear. If Ivor had been a NYPD officer and the incident had occurred on the New York subway, it would have featured on your front page. Shame.

More seriously- A Scot named Harry Stanley was shot dead by the Metropolitan Police in 1999 because he was carrying a coffee table leg which had just been repaired.
The 'Scotsman' didn't get overexcited about that either. Neither did the BBC or anybody else.
It's only news when a foreigner gets shot.

Yes, if you want to bump off somebody - just phone the police and tell them that he is carrying a shotgun,handgun or an AK47 hidden under his clothing - the police will overreact and shoot him dead for you!

Remember the case of a 6 year old who left a 'plastic' gun on the back seat of his parents' car - and this was reported by a stupid member of the public like in Harry Stanley's case - his Dad was nearly shot dead for that 'crime' at a petrol station

Menezes police told 'shoot to kill'

Armed officers were told to shoot to kill suspected suicide bombers on the day they gunned down innocent Jean Charles de Menezes, the Old Bailey has heard.

They were told they would be using "new and unusual tactics" and given special bullets to ensure death.

A firearms officer code named Ralph had no doubt that he or another officer "might have to shoot someone point blank in the head", said Clare Montgomery, QC, prosecuting.

The armed officers were briefed about their role after a surveillance team staked out flats in south London linked to July 21 bomber Hussain Osman. But they did not arrive there until four hours later, after Mr de Menezes, a 27-year-old Brazilian electrician left to catch an underground train. When they eventually caught up with him on a train at Stockwell Station, he was shot seven times in the head by two officers.

The Metropolitan police denies putting Mr de Menezes and members of the public at risk by making "shocking and catastrophic" mistakes on July 22 2005.

Ralph, the leader of the "black team" of firearms officers said they were given the impression they were dealing with a "deadly and determined, suicidal bomber", said Ms Montgomery.

They were issued with pistols loaded with "special 124 grain ammunition" which has been shown "to produce death much more quickly and prevent somebody reacting", she said. "That is why it was loaded, because it was thought they might have to fire into someone's head."

During the briefing the officers were told they would be using "unusual tactics that the department had not used before", Ms Montgomery said. "Ralph understood this to mean they might have to shoot someone point blank in the head."

The officers were told the people they might have to deal with were "deadly" and "up for it", jurors were told.

"They were also warned that the bombers might be carrying explosive devices that could easily be concealed about the body and detonated. As a result of the briefing Ralph had no doubt that there was a real likelihood of he or another firearms officer having to deal with a deadly and determined suicidal bomber."
